- This inquisitive duo is a pair of Arabian bustards I met while visiting the National Avian Research Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE. They are part of a captive breeding program which hopes to increase their numbers in the wild. Found across the Sahel region of Africa and southwestern Arabia, these birds prefer to live alone or in very small family flocks. During the breeding season, females are responsible for incubating their eggs and raising their young, as well as protecting the nest from outside threats. If she senses danger, the female will engage in several diversionary behaviors to draw potential predators away from her chicks. #birds #bustard #Arabian #wildlife #PhotoArk #NationalWildlifeWeek

- This adorable kitten is a four-month-old oncilla. As the smallest wildcat species in South America, oncillas like this one will weigh between four and eight pounds when fully grown and measure just over a foot in length (not including their tail). These small cats share habitat with margays and ocelots. In order to reduce competition for prey and increase their chances of survival, oncillas will take smaller prey like rodents, birds, and insects that are of less interest to the bigger cats. #oncilla #kitten #wildcat #feline #video #PhotoArk
- In the past decade giant panda numbers have risen by more than 15 percent, but this rare bear isn’t out of the woods yet. Traditional threats to pandas such as poaching appear to be declining, but disturbances including mining, hydro-power, and tourism are on the rise.Thankfully, conservation efforts to tackle these threats and increase the panda’s population are taking place around the world. Global awareness and conservation efforts won’t just protect the panda - they will also benefit many other rare species as well, including the endangered takin, golden monkey, red panda, and crested ibis! #NationalPandaDay #panda #blackandwhite #cub #video #reel #PhotoArk
- Meet Muggy, the vermiculated eagle-owl. Vermiculated is the term used to describe the wavy line pattern observed in the plumage of this species. In the wild, eagle-owls like Muggy are found in the northern part of sub-Saharan Africa where they roost in cliff crevices and trees and practice perch hunting, feeding on a variety of insects and vertebrate species. #eagleowl #muggy #animal #wildlife #birdofprey #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- You’re looking at one of the most amazing and ingenious reproduction strategies in the entire animal kingdom. This female pocketbook mussel is using her own flesh to create a minnow-like lure to get a large stream fish to bite her, which then releases clouds of her microscopic babies into the water. Once launched into the stream, the larval young attempt to latch onto the fish’s gills and fins, then ride around awhile before falling off, dropping into the gravel of the streambed. Once settled, the larvae will begin to transform into juvenile mussels. Since adult mussels can’t travel, this elaborate process is how this kind of animal spreads its young upstream. #mussel #lure #pocketbook #video #wildlife #PhotoArk
- Only male proboscis monkeys have large, pendulous noses which help their calls carry throughout their home range. Their nose is also an indicator of their social status - the larger the nose, the more dominant the male. And though they spend most of their time high up in the trees within Borneo’s forests, this species also loves to swim. They can dive as deep as 20 meters below the surface. #monkey #primate #video #proboscis #PhotoArk
- Meet Emmy, a southwestern pond turtle. Turtles like Emmy are opportunistic hunters, consuming almost anything they can catch and overpower. While a reliable source of water is important to this species, habitat on land is equally as important for nesting and going underground for brumation (reduced metabolic activity during cold conditions). #turtle #pondturtle #animal #reptile #wildlife #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- Wrinkled hornbills are monogamous and remain part of a mated pair for life. When they have chicks, the female will plaster over the entrance to the nest, which rests in a tree hollow, enclosing herself and the chicks inside to keep everyone safe from potential predators. Using a small hole left in the wall, the male will feed his family, making sure they have the nutrients they need to survive. After a few months, the female will break out of the nest and the male will continue to feed the chicks until they are ready to go out on their own. #hornbill #wrinkled #bird #wildlife #PhotoArk #LoveHornbillsDay
- A healthy owl population is a sign of a balanced ecosystem. In order for owls to thrive, populations of the species they prey upon must be abundant and healthy as well - a pattern that continues down the entire food chain. This means that if the health or number of prey species declines, something in the environment has changed and is altering the natural structure of the food web. A world without owls would spell trouble for humans, as their role as a top predator of rodents protects us from the spread of diseases and protects our crops from being raided. #owls #birds #video #PhotoArk #SuperbOwlDay
- This adorable critter is a mountain beaver. The definition of a homebody, these beavers rarely venture far from their nests, and have been known to stay at the same site for several years before relocating. They often live alone, but may form groups if habitat and food resources are limited to a small area.#beaver #animal #wildlife #male #PhotoArk
- In the wild, ornate cowfish are found off the coast of southern Australia, usually in seagrass beds in depths up to 50 feet. When stressed, this species releases ostracitoxin from its skin which can kill other nearby fish, which is why it is rarely kept by aquarium hobbyists. #fish #cowfish #animal #wildlife #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- Arabian mountain gazelles live in hilly habitats throughout the middle east. Though they aren’t long distance runners, they are natural born sprinters, reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. They also have excellent vision and a good sense of smell, which are used for predator detection and finding food, respectively. #gazelle #arabian #animal #mammal #wildlife #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- At six inches long and weighing less than half a pound, the Egyptian fruit bat is quite small; but you wouldn’t know that by looking at their wingspan, which reaches nearly two feet! These bats create large colonies, often with more than 1,000 members, and are believed to be the most vocal of all bat species, emitting high-pitched squeals and clicks when searching for food. #bat #fruitbat #Egyptian #vocal #nocturnal #animal #wildlife #video #footage #reel #PhotoArk
- Despite this yellow- legged frog’s muscular appearance, this species is prone to flight rather than fight when faced with danger. When frightened, they will dive to the bottom of a body of water and take refuge among stones or vegetation, remaining still until the threat has passed. Their ability to evade predators is further helped by their coloration, which usually blends well with the color of rocks and soil in their environment. #frog #amphibian #animal #wildlife #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- Erect ears with tufts of black fur are a unique characteristic of caracals like these two. As these little ones mature, they’ll be able to conquer prey several times their mass, often with an acrobatic leap. They will be equally agile when evading predators and capable of scaring off much larger aggressors. #caracals #kittens #babies #animals #wildlife #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- Found in Indonesia, the Sumba hornbill plays a special role in local folklore and ceremonies. At one time these birds were collected for their meat because it was believed they held the cure for rheumatism and asthma. Long tail feathers and impressive casques were also desired by collectors. Though finding the bird in the pet trade seems to be declining, but a long history of such activities, combined wtih habitat loss, has left the hornbill vulnerable to extinction. #hornbill #Sumba #bird #animal #wildlife #video #reel #footage #colorful #beautiful #PhotoArk

- Antarctic winter where temperatures can plummet below -76 degrees Fahrenheit and winds can reach up to 124 miles per hour. Males, who are in charge of incubating the eggs, will fast throughout courtship, nesting, and incubation, living off of reserves of body fat. By the time incubation has come to an end and the female returns to relieve her mate, he may have lost up to 45% of his total body weight. #animals #birds #penguins #emperorpenguin #animal #bird #wildlife #video #footage #reel #PhotoArk
- This beauty is a Bornean peacock-pheasant, which is considered to be one of the rarest and least known of all peacock-pheasant species. Males like this one have twenty tail feathers decorated with blue-green ocelli which can be spread out in a fan-like display. In contrast, females are smaller and duller brown than the male, with brown irises and no spurs on their legs. Researchers once thought this species was a subspecies of the Malayan peacock- pheasant because of physical similarities, but this has been ruled out since the birds are well- isolated geographically. This bird is part of a conservation breeding program to try and ensure the continued survival of this very rare species. #bird #pheasant #peacock #borneo #animal #wildlife #video #footage #reel #colorful #PhotoArk
- Living in a variety of forest types, the diet of the Eastern screech owl is one of the most varied of all North American owl species. Primary prey is region-specific, with these tiny raptors feeding on everything from insects, crayfish, and earthworms to songbirds, rodents, and amphibians. Hunting under the cover of darkness, screech owls will swoop down from their perch and capture prey, sometimes storing uneaten food items in tree cavities. #owl #screechowl #tiny #red #nocturnal #raptor #hunter #bird #animal #wildlife #reel #video #footage #PhotoArk
- Weighing just five pounds, northern rockhopper penguins are one of the smallest species of crested penguins. But what they lack in size they make up for with big personalities. These birds are often observed slapping each other with their flippers and jabbing with open bills when competing for nesting sites, mating rights, and food. They are also quite vocal, using loud calls to share their location with mates and chicks, as well as to ward off any unwanted visitors. #rockhopper #penguin #bird #animal #wildlife #crest #video #reel #footage #PhotoArk
- Wilson’s plover chicks like these grow up fast. While mom and dad tend to their young, soon the chicks will be responsible for feeding themselves and take their first flight at just three weeks old. While exploring the beach, these chicks will run a few steps, pause, then run again, pecking at the ground in search of something good to eat. #plover #chick #wilson #birds #animals #wildlife #video #footage #PhotoArk
- Despite their excellent eyesight, red octopuses use touch and smell to find food, relying on chemical and texture receptors that line the rims of its suckers. Emerging at night, this species searches the seafloor, crawling in and out of rocky areas to flush out crabs and shrimp. Once prey is secured, the octopus will kill it with venom secreted from its salivary glands before cracking the shell with its beak. #octopus #red #hunter #marinelife #underwater #tentacles #video #footage #animal #wildlife #PhotoArk
