Joel SartoreThis beauty is a Bornean peacock-pheasant, which is considered to be one of the rarest and least known of all peacock-pheasant species. Males like this one have twenty tail feathers decorated with blue-green ocelli which can be spread out in a fan-like display. In contrast, females are smaller and duller brown than the male, with brown irises and no spurs on their legs. Researchers once thought this species was a subspecies of the Malayan peacock- pheasant because of physical similarities, but this has been ruled out since the birds are well- isolated geographically. This bird is part of a conservation breeding program to try and ensure the continued survival of this very rare species. #bird #pheasant #peacock #borneo #animal #wildlife #video #footage #reel #colorful #PhotoArk
