7In a sobering update, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing giraffes as an endangered species, a response to dramatic declines caused by poaching, habitat loss, and the increasing threats of climate change. This decision, while devastating, will offer vital protections for the species, helping to combat wildlife trafficking, support ecosystem health, and promote sustainable practices. This proposed listing will apply to three northern giraffe subspecies—the West African, Kordofan, and Nubian giraffes—whose populations have plummeted by a staggering 77% since 1985. Today, there are fewer than 6,000 individuals remaining. The Reticulated and Masai giraffes are also being considered for listing as threatened. I had the privilege of working in Niger at a pivotal moment in giraffe conservation in Niger to document an ambitious conservation project spearheaded by the Nigerien government, supported by Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Sahara Conservation. The plan was to capture eight giraffes and reintroduce them 800 km away in the Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve, an area where giraffes had been absent for 50 years. This effort was the next step in restoring this endangered species. In 1996, there were only 49 individuals in the wild, confined to the small area in Niger. Years of dedicated work brought that to over 600 West African giraffes, a remarkable recovery that showcases the power of conservation efforts. The next step was establishing the satellite population, which has been successfully accomplished. But while this progress is encouraging, the species remains dangerously close to extinction, with populations still fragile and vulnerable. In this first photo, you can see a West African giraffe with her calf in what’s known as the "giraffe zone"—a government-defined region in Niger where humans and giraffes coexist. The work isn't over, and our collective efforts are needed more than ever. I'll be sharing more stories from the front lines of giraffe conservation throughout this week, and I invite you to join me in supporting their efforts. I’m packing for #antarctica and have just a few hours to get ready but camera gear is the most important thing I’m carrying with me! I’m a proud @Nikon USA ambassador and will be sharing a list of all the gear I’ll be bringing and hope it’s helpful to anyone else photographing wildlife. I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions before I leave! 🐧🐧🇦🇶🇦🇶 #antarctica #antarcticadventure #grwm #packwithme #drakepassage #penguins #photography #photographer #environmentalphotography #vitalimpacts #polarlattitudes
6Antarctica transforms with the seasons, revealing a vibrant world as the November summer sun rises. Seals, penguins, and other seabirds begin to breed, populating their colonies with new life. With 24-hour daylight, this icy expanse bursts into action – young penguins take their first steps, seals bask on the ice, and seabirds dive for food. It’s a precious, fleeting season where the continent’s resilient spirit comes alive in ways few ever witness. ☀️🇦🇶 This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I’m immensely grateful to witness an Antarctic summer in full bloom. Huge thanks to @PolarLatitudes | Antarctica, @Nikon USA @thinktankphoto, and Luminar Neo for helping me check this off my bucket list! I’m just 5 days away from heading to Antarctica - the coldest place on Earth! While November marks the start of summer there, temperatures still hover well below freezing. Lucky for me, penguins are pros at staying warm, so I’ll be taking a few style notes! 🐧🧊 Penguins thrive in extreme cold, thanks to a brilliantly designed natural coat. Their outer feathers weave together to form a waterproof shield, with softer, fluffy feathers underneath for insulation. Beneath their skin, a thick layer of fat helps retain warmth and provides energy reserves when food is scarce. Plus, they’ve developed a few unique adaptations to keep their feet just above freezing. By regulating blood flow and using built-in heat exchangers at the tops of their legs, penguins can keep their feet warm without losing precious body heat. In fact, they’re so efficient that overheating is their summer problem! Huge gratitude to @PolarLatitudes | Antarctica, @Nikon USA, @thinktankphoto and Luminar Neo for making this Antarctic adventure possible. I can’t wait to see these amazing animals in person! 4A few more images from the Northwest Territories for @National Geographic and @Canadaexplore. To reach Nahanni National Park Reserve, I was guided by Joel Hibbard and Teetl’it Gwich’in guide and activist Bobbi Rose from Canadian River Expeditions. Arriving by floatplane, the breathtaking beauty of the Northwest Territories unfolds beneath us—a mesmerizing patchwork of steep, inhospitable mountains and glacial lakes. Up here, the chill feels distant, but once we land, we become a part of this wild tapestry. In this rugged landscape, we learn that discomfort is an integral thread in the fabric of experience. Just as the rivers flow without interruption, so too do our lives intertwine with all that surrounds us. Every ripple on the water speaks to the connection we share—nothing happens in isolation. Here, in the wild, we discover that our fleeting moments are woven into a timeless existence, reminding us that we are all part of this collective heartbeat of life around us. A heartfelt thank you to the amazing team at National Geographic, Explore Canada, Richard Phillips, Seth Gillis, Kaya Ensor, Charlène Brochu. Stay tuned as I share more images from this journey, and don’t forget to check out the work of my fellow photographers @Kiliii Yuyan and Matthieu Paley! @Nikon USA #nikonpro #nikonambassador #yukon #northwestterritories #canada #natgeoassignment #destinationcanada #wildplaces #arctic #nationalparks #wildcanada
6In the Northwest Territories, I discovered a world overflowing with life—water, wildlife, and everything in between, from majestic grizzlies to tiny mosquitoes. The beauty here is breathtaking, but it’s the challenges that truly shape the experience. I learned to embrace every moment, even the tough ones, alongside people who have deep-rooted connections to this land. With every dip into the icy waters of Glacier Lake, I felt my Floridian instincts fade away. It was a powerful metaphor for my journey: In the beginning, your whole body stings. Then you learn to breathe through it, and it’s amazing. Exploring alongside Indigenous guide and activist Bobbi Rose, I gained insight into the vital work of reconnecting young people to the land. Together with Joel Hibbard from Nahanni River Adventures, we paddled through the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site, sharing stories and spotting a lone grizzly bear. But it was the conversations that truly moved me. Having guides who are so closely tied to the land offered me an invaluable perspective. It’s essential to remember that we’re visitors here. Walking gently and respecting this place was the greatest gift for all of us. A heartfelt thank you to @National Geographic, Richard Phillips, Bobbi Rose, Joel Hibbard, Canadian River Expeditions, Seth Gillis, Kaya Ensor, and Charlène Brochu for this incredible journey. I can’t wait to share more of my experiences with you this week! @Nikon USA #nikonpro #nikonambassador #yukon #northwestterritories #canada #natgeoassignment #destinationcanada #wildplaces #arctic #nationalparks #wildcanada
7This wasn’t just any assignment; it was a first of its kind. I was invited to plan a trip anywhere in Yukon and the Northwest Territories for @National Geographic and Explore Canada. To reach the most remote location, I met up with Nahanni River Adventures and boarded a floatplane that soared over the stunning peaks and walls of the Mackenzie Mountains. We flew above the Cirque of the Unclimbables in Nahanni National Park Reserve, guided by my amazing guides Joel Hibbard and Teetl’it Gwich’in guide and activist Bobbi Rose. Vast, uncharted landscapes stretched beneath us, with rugged mountains and sparkling lakes that seemed to exist on the edge of reality. In this remote expanse, I was struck by the abundance hidden within it. Lakes teemed with fish, and the forests provided everything needed for survival. The sheer magnificence of this place, with its granite peaks piercing the alpine sky brought me to tears. It reminded me of the crucial connection we all need with wildness for our own well-being. A heartfelt thank you to the amazing team at National Geographic, Canada Keep Exploring, Richard Phillips, Kaya Ensor, Seth Gillis, Charlène Brochu, Bobbi Rose for all their incredible work. 7The Yukon is a breathtaking tapestry of vast open spaces and extraordinary wildlife encounters. Just a short drive from Whitehorse, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve serves as a sanctuary for over a dozen native species, many of which have been orphaned and given a second chance at life. As I wandered through the preserve, the ground literally shook beneath me as a herd of ancient Musk Oxen thundered past—a powerful reminder of our connection to the past. In a moment of stillness, I caught sight of the elusive Canada Lynx, its keen eyes scanning the landscape and embodying the wild mystery of this northern realm. From mountain goats effortlessly navigating rocky terrain to playful Arctic ground squirrels darting about and Thin-horned Sheep resting among the aspens, every moment deepened my appreciation for the beauty and fragility of nature. I was particularly moved by the sight of orphaned moose, the largest subspecies in Canada. Their gentle strength plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of their ecosystems, regulating plant life and influencing aquatic environments. In this safe haven, I could observe these magnificent creatures in ways that would be impossible in the wild. Thank you Lindsay Caskenette for this unforgettable experience. I can not wait to come back in the winter! A heartfelt thank you also goes out to Richard Phillips, Kaya Ensor, Seth Gillis, Charlène Brochu, and Heather Greenwood Davis. 6I’ve just returned from one of the most meaningful journeys of my life to the Yukon and Northwest Territories, thanks to @National Geographic and @Canadaexplore. Led by Deb Wild and her son Emerson of Caribou Wild Mountain Tours, I ventured into the backcountry on horseback, camping under the breathtaking northern skies. The sun barely set, dipping just after 1 a.m. and rising again just a few hours later. As I drifted off to sleep, I was serenaded by the soft breaths of the horses and the distant calls of foxes. What struck me most was the deep connection Deb and Emerson share with the land and their horses. Deb expressed a beautiful sentiment: “Everyone should take time in the wilderness to reconnect with their true selves. Open your arms to the sky and embrace it all. It’s worth it.” Her words resonate deeply; in our fast-paced lives, we often forget to simply be. Slowing down can feel impossible, yet it’s precisely what helps us regain our balance. Stay tuned this week as I share more from this incredible journey, and don’t miss the stunning work of my fellow photographers @Kiliii Yuyan and Matthieu Paley! @Nikon USA #nikonpro #nikonambassador #yukon #northwestterritories #canada #natgeoassignment #destinationcanada #wildplaces #arctic #nationalparks #wildcanada
My heart is full of gratitude after this recent DREAM assignment through the Yukon and the Northwest Territories in Canada. This was a first of its kind photography project: National Geographic and Explore Canada asked three National Geographic photographers to document our own stories in different regions of Canada. This land is governed by both the biggest and smallest – the grizzly and the mosquito – and by the extremes of subarctic seasons. The people I met, the landscapes I visited, and the lessons learned will stay with me forever. The sheer magnificence of this place, with its granite peaks piercing the alpine sky brought me to tears. It reminded me of the crucial connection we all need with wildness for our own well-being. In these raw, untouched spaces, we discover a deeper sense of ourselves and a renewed appreciation for the natural world. I returned not only in awe of its magnificence but also acutely aware of its fragility and how we inhabit these spaces. A heartfelt thank you to the amazing team at National Geographic, Explore Canada, Kaya Ensor, Seth Gillis, and Charlène Brochu for all their incredible work. And a special shoutout to Heather Greenwood Davis for the beautiful story she wrote! 3We’re profoundly honored to announce that one of our seven Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Grants will be named after Chico Mendes (@Comitê Chico Mendes), an activist and environmentalist renowned for his dedication to preserving the Amazon rainforest and advocating for the rights of local and Indigenous communities. As a Brazilian rubber tapper and land rights leader, Mendes created the world’s first tropical forest conservation initiative. His efforts led to the establishment of Brazil’s extractive reserves—protected areas where local communities could sustainably harvest natural resources without destroying the forest. Mendes’s work highlighted the importance of conserving the Amazon as a global treasure. Tragically, his activism made him a target for powerful interests in logging and agribusiness. In 1988, at the age of 44, he was assassinated by hired gunmen linked to these industries, drawing international attention to the dangers faced by environmental and Indigenous activists. Since Mendes’s death, over one thousand activists and rainforest defenders have been killed in Brazil. We hope this grant will inspire the same fierce determination to protect and preserve the natural world among our grantees. Act fast - there’s less than a week left to submit your application before the September 15 deadline! 3We are privilged to name one of our environmental storytelling grants in memory of Ian Lemaiyan, whose vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. Ian's charisma and optimism were not only a source of inspiration but also reflected his life’s devotion to innovative problem-solving and conservation. By dedicating this grant to Ian, we celebrate his extraordinary legacy of hope, dedication, and visionary thinking. Ian’s journey began with a passion for studying rhino behavior and blossomed into a distinguished career as a conservation pilot. His vital work, which included critical aerial surveys and anti-poaching patrols across Kenya, demonstrated his deep commitment to wildlife protection and his love for flying. He had a deep love for photography and film, and his work was featured in two films, Wildlife Warriors and The Flying Maasai. These films provide a unique glimpse into Ian’s own words about his passion for conservation and offer a chance to hear his infectious laugh once more. If you haven’t seen them, we highly recommend watching them to fully appreciate Ian’s legacy. Our aim with this grant is to support young dreamers who, like Ian, aspire to make a meaningful difference in the world and honor his remarkable legacy that continues to inspire us all. We are thrilled to announce that Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim will be honored with a new environmental grant named in her recognition. Her remarkable journey began when her mother, shown in the first image, sacrificed everything to ensure that Hindou and her sisters could pursue education. By the age of 12, Hindou founded the Association for Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad, marking the beginning of her unwavering commitment to elevating Indigenous voices and safeguarding their lands. Hindou’s leadership in global climate negotiations, including her role as co-chair of the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change at COP21, has profoundly influenced international policy and spurred positive change. Her innovative approaches—such as introducing income-generating activities for women, employing collaborative tools, and implementing 2D and 3D participatory mapping—have been pivotal in protecting land rights, fostering sustainable ecosystem management, and reducing conflicts over natural resources. As one of the 17 UN advocates for Sustainable Development Goals, Hindou continues to be a tireless advocate for her community and a global champion against environmental degradation. Additionally, Ibrahim is featured as an inspiring speaker in the @Vital Impacts Student Speaker Program, in partnership with Changemaker Talent. 3How hard is it to fool a giant panda? At the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, China, keepers go to great lengths to maintain the pandas’ natural behaviors, even dressing up in panda suits to prevent them from becoming accustomed to humans. It’s a more challenging task than you might think, especially when the suits are scented with panda urine. This ensures that the pandas, who rely heavily on their sense of smell rather than sight, are not exposed to human scents. Even though these pandas are bred in captivity, they are carefully shielded from human contact to prepare them for a future release into the wild. This careful approach is maintained even during rare hands-on checkups. For over thirty years, tremendous efforts have been made to breed pandas, increase their population, and protect their natural habitats. Thanks to these efforts, the panda has been downgraded from “most endangered” to “vulnerable,” as their numbers in the wild are believed to be increasing. 3Giant pandas devote a staggering half of their days to feasting on bamboo. But what do they do when they aren’t eating? They nap! These sleepy bears need so much rest because of their bamboo diet's low nutrient value and their sluggish digestion, leading to an extremely slow metabolism. Which sleeping panda pose looks coziest? 2On World Environment Day, let's celebrate the remarkable work of WildLandscapes International, who have teamed up with Bear Hill Conservancy Trust, Kilham Bear Center, and the USFWS, in their dedicated efforts to preserve Bear Hill Conservancy. Nestled within the pristine Mascoma Headwaters unit of the Conte Refuge, this sanctuary is not just a slice of nature; it's a lifeline for biodiversity and climate resilience. Under the visionary guidance of David Roby, (shown in photos 2 and 10) these collaborators have safeguarded nearly 16,000 acres of precious wilderness. And that's just the beginning! With plans to cultivate an important old-growth forest alongside the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, their mission is clear: perpetual protection of critical habitats, nurturing wildlife diversity, and creating vital habitat corridors linking Bear Hill to the White Mountain National Forest. They are nearing permanent protection of 14,817-acres of New Hampshire’s ecologically rich hardwood forest, placing a conservation easement in the Mascoma Headwaters unit of Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Founder of the Kilham Bear Center, Ben Kilham holds hands with his wife Deb (Photo 9) and nephew Ethan Kilham cares for the bears in photo 5. @Nikon USA #nikonpro #nikonambassador #worldenvironmentday #bearsoftiktok #habitatprotection #bearhill
