We are thrilled to announce that Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim will be honored with a new environmental grant named in her recognition. Her remarkable journey began when her mother, shown in the first image, sacrificed everything to ensure that Hindou and her sisters could pursue education. By the age of 12, Hindou founded the Association for Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad, marking the beginning of her unwavering commitment to elevating Indigenous voices and safeguarding their lands. Hindou’s leadership in global climate negotiations, including her role as co-chair of the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change at COP21, has profoundly influenced international policy and spurred positive change. Her innovative approaches—such as introducing income-generating activities for women, employing collaborative tools, and implementing 2D and 3D participatory mapping—have been pivotal in protecting land rights, fostering sustainable ecosystem management, and reducing conflicts over natural resources. As one of the 17 UN advocates for Sustainable Development Goals, Hindou continues to be a tireless advocate for her community and a global champion against environmental degradation. Additionally, Ibrahim is featured as an inspiring speaker in the @Vital Impacts Student Speaker Program, in partnership with Changemaker Talent. This initiative brings world-class scientists and storytellers for live student talks across the U.S. Discover how to bring a speaker to your community at bit.ly/vitalspeakers. We hope this grant will inspire and support storytelling that highlights Indigenous experiences and knowledge in our collective effort to protect the planet. With only 10 days left to apply, use this opportunity to make an impact through visual storytelling. Learn more and submit your application at vitalimpacts.org.
