- Happy (late) Lion Day!! 🦁💕 #lionking #babyanimals #WorldLionDay #LivingWithLions #photography
- 4At the edge of Loisaba Conservancy in northern Kenya, the next generation is learning how to track and understand lions. Through programs led by Lion Landscapes and supported by local communities, students are being taught how to monitor lion movements, recognize behavior patterns, and use early-warning tools that help prevent conflict. When communities—especially young people—are informed and empowered, they can adapt. They can protect their livestock and the lions. Coexistence becomes possible not through fences or fear, but through knowledge, awareness, and shared responsibility. #WorldLionDay #LivingWithLions #Loisaba #LionLandscapes #Laikipia #Coexistence #ConservationEducation
- 5At the edge of Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia, Kenya, Saack Kosgei peers into the darkness of his fortified livestock enclosure. Behind him, a lion alarm rigged with flashing lights and a blaring speaker, stands ready. If a collared lion nears the enclosure, the alarm will trigger, buying just enough time to keep both the cattle and the lion alive. Across much of Africa, lions are running out of space. As grasslands shrink, seasons shift, and human settlements expand, the pressure builds for everyone. Predators wander farther for food. People build stronger fences. Tensions rise. But here in Laikipia, communities and conservationists are rethinking the old story of “human-wildlife conflict.” With support from groups like Lion Landscapes, locals are trying something different: reinforced bomas, night patrols, early-warning tech and above all, conversation. It’s not simple but little by little, a new relationship is taking shape, not built on fear or blame, but on adaptation and creativity. If you’re moved by this story and want to support the extraordinary work of @Loisaba Conservancy, please consider contributing to their current match campaign. Go to their profile and click on the link for wildlife ranger challenge. Every donation right now will go twice as far in protecting endangered species and the people who dedicate their lives to them. - 5Tomorrow is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, and we honor the communities who are protecting the planet’s last wild places. These powerful images from South Sorong, Southwest Papua, are part of the upcoming exhibition VITAL: Our Irreplaceable Earth, opening August 26 at the Muscarelle Museum honoring William & Mary's of the Environment. Through photography, VITAL highlights Earth's most vulnerable landscapes—places rich in irrecoverable carbon that if released into the atmosphere will accelerate climate change in ways we cannot undo. They tell one of many stories featured in the show, stories about irrecoverable carbon and the people fighting to protect it. This particular story comes from Indigenous communities in Southwest Papua, whose ancestral lands were nearly lost to palm oil companies. But the people refused to give up what was most sacred. They have faith that “The forest is our mother, the sea is our father.” With support from @konservasi and Conservation International, they began mapping their territory, asserting their land rights, and organizing their resistance. After years of effort, the government has acknowledged the existence and territories of Indigenous communities. But this recognition is only the first step. Full rights to forests and the management of customary lands have yet to be fully granted. Their journey is far from over, but hope continues to burn bright. Their path for victory doesn't benefit them alone, it serves as a global reminder of the power of community, cultural strength, and a deep connection to nature. When we listen to and support Indigenous voices, we take a step closer to a more just and sustainable future for everyone. #InternationalIndigenousDay #OurIrreplaceableEarth #ConservationInternational #KonservasiIndonesia #WestPapua #MuscarelleMuseum

- Tonight, in honor of those who risk everything to protect Earth’s most endangered species, @PBS airs the powerful season finale of Human Footprint. The episode, Vanishing Act, delves into the human role in extinction and what we stand to lose biologically, emotionally, and spiritually when a species disappears. Featured in the episode is our dear friend Zacharia Mutai of Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of the devoted caretakers of the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. His quiet strength and deep bond with these animals embody the heartbreak, hope, and dedication that define the life of a ranger. Let his story move you and remind us all why this work matters. Tune in and witness this unforgettable hour of television. 📺 Human Footprint | PBS | July 30 | 9pm/8c #WorldRangerDay #HumanFootprintPBS #VanishingActPBS #ZachariaMutai

- Last Chance! TODAY is the final day to explore the Vital Impacts Annual Print Sale. Each image in this collection captures a powerful story of conservation, resilience, and the breathtaking beauty of our natural world. What started as a vision to unite photographers in support of grassroots conservation and impactful environmental visual storytelling has grown into a global movement. The initial goal of Vital Impacts was straightforward: to bring powerful images of our planet into people's homes, hoping that daily exposure to these visuals would inspire them. Stories can be transformative and galvanize the meaningful actions necessary for enduring change. My first private sale was sparked by outrage over the U.S.'s plan to reverse the ban on the elephant tusk trade back in 2017. To channel that frustration, I launched a print sale to benefit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary I’d been working with, raising $50,000 in just a couple of weeks. I soon realized we could achieve more by working together, which led to the beginnings of Vital Impacts. We gathered an impressive group of hundreds of photographers, celebrated fine artists, up-and-coming talents, and even had Dr. Jane Goodall donate images for sale. For this sale, sixty percent of the profits go to COICA ORG—an inspiring organization representing 511 Indigenous communities working tirelessly to protect the Amazon River Basin and its vital ecosystems, while 40 percent goes directly to the photographers. Even if people don’t buy images, my hope was that they get inspired by the work. For the past four years, we've run print sales benefiting conservation nonprofits, raising $3.3 million. Massive thanks to our incredible partners Canson Infinity, Paper & Ink Studio, and theprintspace for your artistry and support, and to each of the incredible photographers who have shared their work to make this possible! - 5Every day around the world, girls and women spend a collective 200 million hours collecting water for their communities and families. The constant need to seek clean water, robs them of not only their time but also their potential. They are not able to develop their own skills because they must spend all of their free time collecting water. This pursuit becomes more difficult and time consuming as climate change causes frequent and severe droughts and sea-level rise contaminates other sources of fresh water. Currently, two billion people lack access to safe drinking water, and nearly half the global population experiences severe water scarcity at least part of the year. With climate change and population growth, these numbers are expected to continue rising. Today is World Water Day, and we all have a role in making every drop count. Simple actions, like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, can save up to 8 gallons a day. Learn more, including how you can help, on my page and by looking for organizations, locally and globally, making clean water a reality for everyone.
- 5Standing beneath the immense canopy of an ancient old-growth cedar in the Rainbow-Jordan wilderness, a sentinel of the earth for perhaps 2,000 years, I’m immersed in the damp, earthy air, thick with history and vitality. The tree’s gnarled trunk and expansive branches encircle me, and I can almost feel the deep pulse of life coursing through it, mirroring my own heartbeat. I’m struck by the countless seasons it has endured, the storms it has weathered, the wildlife it has sheltered, and its quiet witness to history unfolding. These ancient forests, Earth's silent guardians, play an indispensable role in sustaining biodiversity in all its forms, from the tiniest insects to the largest mammals. Yet, much of this irreplaceable ecosystem remains unprotected and faces the imminent threat of logging. With less than 12% of the Inland Temperate Rainforest safeguarded, we risk losing one of the planet’s most vital carbon stores and a key ally in the fight against climate change. Protecting these forests isn’t just about saving trees, it’s about preserving the intricate web of life that depends on them, including our own. Follow @Conservation Int to learn more about these vital forests and the life they sustain.
- 4Bhutan is a kingdom that uses happiness as its guiding principle, measuring progress not in dollars but in gross national happiness. This approach values community, compassion, and a deep connection to the land. Despite being one of the smallest countries in the world, Bhutan demonstrates a remarkable commitment to conservation. As one of the few carbon-negative countries, Bhutan mandates in its constitution that at least 60 percent of its land remain under forest cover indefinitely, ensuring its people can maintain a fundamental right to live in a healthy environment. Yesterday was World Happiness Day, and I am reminded that wildness is not separate from us; it is a source of inspiration and strength. #Bhutan #GrossNationalHappiness #Inspiration #hopecore #climateaction
- Happy National Panda Day! It’s hard to imagine, but giant pandas were once as mythical and elusive as Bigfoot. Though they’ve existed for millions of years, the Western world only learned of them relatively recently. The first live panda was captured in 1936, sparking a “pandamania” that resulted in 14 pandas being trafficked from China before the country put a stop to foreigners taking them. Decades later, during President Richard Nixon’s historic 1972 visit, China gifted Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing to the United States. The pair received much fanfare, with over 20,000 people joining the First Lady to welcome them to the zoo. Since the 1980s, China has not given pandas as gifts to foreign nations, but rather loans them to zoos. Last year, new giant pandas arrived in the United States, finding homes at the San Diego Zoo and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where they will be part of cooperative research projects with China to better understand and protect the species. Once highly endangered due to habitat loss, pandas have made a remarkable comeback—downgraded to a ‘Vulnerable’ status in 2016 thanks to efforts to restore and expand bamboo forests. The recovery of the panda shows that when science, political will and engagement of local communities come together, it can help save our planet’s vanishing biodiversity.
- 4At the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center in Sichuan, China, a dedicated team tends newborn panda cubs, bottle-feeding, burping, weighing, and monitoring them around the clock. Each tiny panda represents hope for the species, and their survival is no small feat. Leading the charge was Zhang Hemin, affectionately known as ‘Papa Panda’, (shown in photo 3) whose life’s work helped bring pandas back from the brink of extinction. “The ultimate goal is to release, release, release,” he says. I’ve had two important jobs in my life so far. To get pandas breeding, which is now not a problem. Now we have to make sure there's a good habitat and then put pandas in it.” From fragile newborns in incubators to young cubs relearning their wild instincts, these pandas’ journeys are a testament to the commitment of those working behind the scenes. Learn more about their amazing stories in my @National Geographic story, “Pandas Get to Know Their Wild Side” that also became a best selling book, Panda Love: The Secret Lives of Pandas.
- 5Counting down the days until International Panda Day with these adorable cubs! 🐼💗 Born blind, nearly hairless, and just 1/900 the size of their mother, panda cubs start life as tiny, squeaky bundles of vulnerability. But don’t be fooled, these little giants grow fast. Undergoing an astonishing growth spurt, they balloon from four ounces to four pounds in a month. Panda cubs are among the fastest-growing mammals on the planet. Once fully grown, they reach up to six feet in length, with females weighing around 220 pounds and males up to 250. But giant panda cubs are incredibly rare and notoriously difficult to raise and breed in captivity. In the 1960s, only 30% of infant pandas born at breeding centers survived. Today, thanks to groundbreaking conservation efforts, that number has skyrocketed to 90%–-a true conservation success story!

- Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️ Hold on to your hearts! We are turning up the love meter with this story about a sweet little fellow named "Valentine", the first black rhino calf born at Loisaba in over 50 years! This precious guy was born October 16, 2024, to Kibou—an eight-year-old black rhino who came from @olpejetaconservancy. An outrageous amount of love and effort went into welcoming Kibou and 20 other critically endangered black rhinos back to Loisaba last year. Thanks to collaboration among local communities, conservation heroes, and government agencies like @Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya’s black rhino population, once on the brink of extinction with just 240 individuals in the 1980s, has now grown to over 1,000. The habitat needed to be expanded so this move marked the beginning of a new population. But don’t pop the champagne just yet; there’s still work to be done! Expanding and connecting habitats like Loisaba is key to ensuring our beloved black rhinos population keeps growing. So, as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, be a part of this inspiring story and follow Loisaba Conservancy, The Nature Conservancy and me for updates on my adventures and the remarkable efforts to protect Kenya’s wildlife. And be sure to check out Issue 2 / 2025 of Nature Conservancy Magazine for the full story behind this incredible effort to save Kenya's black rhinos. - I am excited to share that on January 14th, I will be traveling to East Lansing, Michigan to @Michigan State University’s @Wharton Center for Performing Arts. My talk, Wild Hope, will be about inspiring stories of innovation and resilience in the natural world. Michigan holds a special place in my heart, as it is where my roots run deep. My maternal grandparents, who were a pivotal influence in my upbringing, raised my mother and her siblings in Michigan, and I have fond memories of spending summers there as a child. My grandfather, a hardworking man of Polish descent, had a remarkable journey from working on the Hoover Dam as a teenager to ultimately becoming the Post Master General in Detroit. I was so proud of him and knew his work was a vital lifeline for Americans. His tales of resilience have inspired me and fueled my passion for storytelling. As I prepare to return to Michigan, I am filled with nostalgia and gratitude for the impact this community has had on my life. I look forward to honoring the legacy of my grandfather and sharing an unforgettable evening with the audience. Thank you for the opportunity to connect with you all in a place that holds such significance in my personal history and thank you to Changemaker Talent for bringing me home. - Words can’t fully express our gratitude to @Dave Matthews Band or his unwavering support of the @RetetiElephants. Not only is Dave an extraordinary musician, but he uses his platform to heal, inspire, and reconnect us with the wild. I had the privilege of meeting Dave in North Dakota, and after just one conversation, a stranger at the time, he agreed to travel to Kenya with his family to see the work being done at Reteti. His visit, his generosity, and his advocacy have had an immeasurable impact—reconnecting hearts and minds around the world, and helping rewild not just elephants, but the very spirit of our shared humanity. Dave’s involvement in the early days of Reteti was a turning point for the sanctuary, and his continued support has been critical to the sanctuary’s success. His words resonate deeply: “Supporting the plight for survival as a species is about so much more than seeing them flourish. It’s about acknowledging their crucial role in a healthy future for our planet’s biodiversity, wild landscapes, and people worldwide.” You can be a part of this incredible journey. Your support helps care for orphaned elephants, strengthen communities, and protect wildlife. Thank you, Dave, for showing us all the power of compassion and the lasting change one person can create. Endless gratitude to Dane Henry, Brett Lowell, and Corey Rich for helping to create this film, which became the cornerstone of our first fundraising campaign for Reteti.

- 3Coming together in peace and gratitude is always worth embracing. Wishing everyone around the world a moment of reflection and connection. Here, a mother giraffe nuzzles her baby outside of the village of Doulouwal Peulh in Niger. The giraffes here are all descents of a population of the last remaining 49 "white giraffes" who, driven by drought and war, followed the route of the Niger River from neighboring Mali, until finally settled here in the Koure region. They were the last remnants of the "white giraffe" who once ranged throughout West Africa, from Senegal to Nigeria. Today there are over 600 of them because of the efforts of conservationists and govermnent intervention. In 2018, the Nigerien government, with support from Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Sahara Conservation was able to successfully establish a satellite population in Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve 800km away. While there there is very still far to go, hope for this vulnerable species that was on the bring of extinction grows. Last week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing a number of giraffes species, including the Western Giraffe, as endangered, a response to dramatic declines caused by poaching, habitat loss, and the increasing threats of climate change. This decision, while devastating, may be what we need to provide vital protections for the species. Follow Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Sahara Conservation to learn about this important work. - 10In a sobering update, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing giraffes as an endangered species, a response to dramatic declines caused by poaching, habitat loss, and the increasing threats of climate change. This decision, while devastating, will offer vital protections for the species, helping to combat wildlife trafficking, support ecosystem health, and promote sustainable practices. This proposed listing will apply to three northern giraffe subspecies—the West African, Kordofan, and Nubian giraffes—whose populations have plummeted by a staggering 77% since 1985. Today, there are fewer than 6,000 individuals remaining. The Reticulated and Masai giraffes are also being considered for listing as threatened. I had the privilege of documenting the dramatic move of two Rothschild’s (Nubian) giraffe that had become marooned on Longicharo Island, a rocky lava pinnacle in the middle of western Kenya’s Lake Baringo. The rising lake levels turned the peninsula into an island, trapping the giraffes. In a dramatic rescue, two were transported across the lake on a makeshift raft, to Ruko Community Conservancy, with the remaining six being transported some months later. Today fewer than 3,000 Rothschild’s giraffes are left in Africa, with about 800 in Kenya. Save Giraffes Now helped orchestrate this inspiring move with the Northern Rangelands Trust and Kenya Wildlife Service. #giraffes #stoppoaching #kenya #africa #everydayafrica
