How much of what we understand about love and relationships is shaped by the environment we grow up in? Cherif reflects on the attitudes towards women and masculinity he was exposed to growing up, where having multiple partners was often treated as a measure of status among men, and vulnerability was discouraged. Meeting his fiancée challenged those beliefs. Through her emotional openness, he began to understand the importance of acknowledging his own feelings, learning to love himself and recognising how his actions could affect others. An honest reflection on unlearning harmful behaviours, challenging traditional ideas of masculinity and discovering what it really means to love and respect another person. Cherif tried therapy and opening up to others, but struggled to find the understanding he was searching for. Being told to let go or be grateful didn't help him make sense of emotions he hadn't yet fully explored. It was through filmmaking, particularly his deeply personal projects One Day and Scars, that he found a way to revisit his experiences, ask difficult questions and begin to understand his pain. A reminder that healing isn't always a straightforward process, and that different forms of expression can help us make sense of what we've been through. For years, Cherif struggled to understand why his father hadn't been emotionally present during his childhood. It wasn't until he began making Scars, a film exploring the relationship between a grieving father and his son, that he started to see his own father's experience differently. Through storytelling, Cherif was able to recognise the grief his father had been carrying after losing his wife, and how that pain had shaped their relationship. What began as a way of processing his own loss became an unexpected path towards understanding, forgiveness and reconnection. Rosemary Ferguson retrained as a nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner after a successful career in modelling, and now helps people understand the connection between food, inflammation and chronic pain. Jean reflects on their conversation on I’m Fine and how recovering from multiple pelvic surgeries completely changed the way she thinks about the body. What felt like an unrelated gut issue turned out to be connected to everything her body had been through, opening her eyes to just how interconnected our health really is. Pain doesn't always start where you think it does, and looking at the bigger picture can often tell a very different story. Something that came up when recording Season 2 was distinguishing between pain and suffering, which @ambervalletta spoke about. ❤️ Pain is inherent and universal, it’s part of being alive… heartbreak, disappointment, grief and mistakes. The thing that can be challenging is the meaning we can attribute to our experiences. The narrative we tell ourselves about the experiences we have and who we are within them. We can’t always choose what happens, but it can be helpful to be aware of the stories we tell ourselves in relation to painful experiences.
Nobody else can tell you who you are. Many of our guests throughout Season 2 had experienced very different challenges, but so many spoke about the importance of trusting themselves, staying true to who they are, and finding their own path rather than following someone else's. What has life taught you about being yourself?
Something that comes up all the time in our conversations for I'm Fine is the importance of community. The World Cup is an example of how powerful that can be. It brings friends, strangers and whole countries together. There is a huge sense of connection and belonging. But belonging can also become "us versus them". And when that happens, connection can turn into exclusion, hostility and harm. @terrestrialunited is a reminder that kindness, looking out for one another and honouring human rights matter far more than the final score. Before we're fans of different teams, we're all human.
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be? We asked some of our Season 2 guests that question (or what they'd say to someone going through a difficult time), and their answers were honest, comforting and surprisingly universal. What's the one thing you'd want your younger self to know?
Pain isn’t something to outrun, suppress or fight against. Whether we were talking about chronic pain, grief, trauma, recovery, identity or loss, so many of our guests spoke about the importance of listening to pain rather than resisting it. Not because it’s easy, but because pain often has something to teach us. We’re curious to know, what has pain - or this series - taught you? #ImFinePodcast
One of the biggest lessons from this season is that nobody gets a free pass when it comes to pain. Everyone has a story. Everyone has a wound. Everyone has something they're working through. Talking to people properly is a good reminder of that.
Community is key. Again and again the guests on Season 2 spoke about kindness, connection, chosen family, finding your people, and showing up for one another. A reminder that we're not meant to do life alone. What person or community has helped shape who you are today?
Throughout Season 2, Jean asked our guests to share what 'I'm Fine' means to them. By the end, most responses arrived at a very different understanding of what it means to be "fine". For some, it meant accepting pain. For others, it meant finding hope, choosing themselves, asking for help, or simply being honest about where they were. These were the responses that stayed with us. What does "I'm Fine" mean to you?
There are some experiences that affect far more people than is obvious, and they are often happen behind closed doors. The sadness is that so many feel isolated with the experience… sometimes it’s only when opening up that we find we’re actually not alone. I found my conversation with Sophie-Rose eye-opening, not just in terms of fertility and IVF, but in the way she spoke about navigating uncertainty, letting go of shame, and finding strength in situations you never expect to face. What stayed with me most was her ability to hold onto hope, even when things didn't go the way she had wished them to. To watch the full conversation, click the link in our bio. 🤍
A piece of advice that stayed with Sophie throughout her fertility journey came from a friend: "If you're creative, you'll have your baby." For Sophie-Rose, it was a reminder that there are many different paths to parenthood, and that hope doesn't always have to look the way we first imagined. The full conversation with Sophie-Rose is available to watch now on YouTube.
“I felt so much shame and kind of anger towards my body.” Sophie-Rose Harper @sophierosepilates speaks honestly about the shame she experienced when her fertility journey didn’t go the way she’d expected, and how that relationship with her body has changed over time. She reflects on moving from self-blame and anger towards strength, acceptance and self-compassion. The full conversation with Sophie-Rose Harper is available to watch now on YouTube. Link in bio.
