- ❓🎂 Was Chopin born on 22 February or 1 March? Or sometime else entirely? To this very day, the exact date of the composer’s birth remains a debatable matter. Chopin himself claimed that he was born on 1 March 1810, but many sources seem to indicate not only a different day, but also a different year. What’s the truth? The Director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, dr Artur Szklener, tells the story of the many controversies surrounding Chopin’s date of birth. 🎥 The full video is available on our YouTube channel.
- Who will we see on 1 March in Żelazowa Wola? Let us know in the comments! ☺️ We will let you in on a secret... we have gifts for the first 216 guests! 🎁 The full schedule of the event can be found at www.museum.nifc.pl #chopin #birthdayparty #classicalmusic
- 🎂🎶Jan Lisiecki - Chopin Birthday Concert | tickets still available! The celebrations will begin on 26 February at 7:30 p.m., at the Warsaw Philharmonic. with an extraordinary recital by Jan Lisiecki. Falling into a world’s elite of pianists, the young virtuoso, linked by a long-standing artistic friendship with the Chopin Institute, in a program titled ‘World (of) Dance’ has combined works by Chopin, Brahms, Szymanowski, Schubert, de Falla, and Piazzolla. The common denominator – not only the titular element – is danceability. The result is an exceptionally interesting, multi-coloured mosaic of styles and moods – an intelligent play on context, promising both good entertainment and a space for reflection. 🎫 Tickets: http://bilety.nifc.pl
- Imagine if you could discover the emotions that guided Chopin during his composing process, how he created and revised his works🤯 You can discover all this thanks to the perfect copies of Chopin's original manuscripts, which we have just published in facsimile form! ☺️ Be sure to visit www.sklep.nifc.pl 👌 #chopin #classicalmusic #manuscript
- 📚 The Elbląg Library, named after Cyprian Norwid since 1970, is one of the oldest such institutions in Poland. The collection’s origins date back to the 16th century. It was then that Jan Mylius, a teacher and rector of the Elbląg Gymnasium, founded the library at the school he headed. The first volumes were added in 1599, and the initiator ensured its expansion, either through purchases or through donations from deceased Gymnasium professors, mayors, pastors, and other city notables. Many valuable objects from the Elbląg Library collection, thanks to a grant from the European Funds for Digital Development programme won by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute ‘Polish musical culture in a European perspective – sources and contexts’, have been digitized and will soon be available for viewing on the website https://polish.musicsources.pl/. - 📚 The Elbląg Library, named after Cyprian Norwid since 1970, is one of the oldest such institutions in Poland. Today, the collection – which returned to the Elbląg Library in 2000–2002 after more than five decades from the depository of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library in Toruń – includes two oldest items: prayer books printed in 1612 by Wendel Bodenhausen (the German editor had settled in Elbląg several years earlier and primarily published Latin treatises by Gymnasium professors, as well as occasional prints in Latin and German). As many as 9,022 volumes from the Elbląg Library – dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries – are included in the national library collection (and are therefore subject to special protection as being of exceptional value and significance to the national heritage). Since 2008, projects focused on the preservation of this historic collection have been implemented – the Library currently has modern storage facilities and a Conservation Workshop; the secured items are made available in digital format. Thanks to a grant obtained from the European Funds for Digital Development programme, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute will digitise 519 items from the Elbląg Library collections – including manuscripts of works by Heinrich Nitschmann (composer, poet, translator and Polonophile, a very important figure for Elbląg in the Romantic period) and one of the previously mentioned 17th-century prayer books, ‘Kirchenordnung: wie es mit den gemeinen Gebeten…’ – all of which will be made available on the Polish Music Heritage website in open access 👉 https://polish.musicsources.pl/ Read more on our website 👉 http://nauka.nifc.pl

- ⛸️ Winter is in full swing here in Poland, and we’re sure Chopin would be having fun with it! Did you know that as a kid, he was a fan of… skating? While enjoying himself on the ice around the turn of 1826, the teenage Chopin had an accident, although the consequences were not overly drastic. Piotr Mysłakowski quotes Eugeniusz Skrodzki’s account as follows: “A few days later, Chopin was skating around the iced-over stream here, where the channel that runs down from the high ground in front of Holy Cross Church to ul. Oboźna was built for the fountain forty years ago. (…) As the two of us were skating away, Chopin suddenly fell on the ice, either because he hit a stone or because his skates were poorly secured, and blood started oozing from his head. I looked on in fear as he went pale and lost strength. (…) There was, however, more fear than pain involved. Even though the surgeon Dr Szwencki was called for immediately, Fryderyk was at school as usual the next day.”

- 🙅♂️ Chopin was known for the fact that he didn’t like giving his pieces titles… yet some of his most famous works are know as “The Raindrop Prelude,” “The Revolutionary Efude,” and so on, and so forth… 🤔 Why is that the case, and what’s one piece by Chopin whose title - unintended by the composer himself - reflects the current time of year?
- 📜 Two new facsimile editions of Chopin’s works have appeared in our long-running series! 🔹 Polonaise in F minor [Op. 71 No. 3]. WN 12 (presentation autograph, Fryderyk Chopin Museum in Warsaw) The manuscript which is the basis for this facsimile edition most likely dates back to 1828 and is currently kept at the Fryderyk Chopin Museum in Warsaw. Chopin gifted it to an unknown recipient in Stuttgart, in 1836. The Polonaise was written on a decorative sheet of paper. The author of the scientific commentary in this edition is Piotr Wojciechowski. 🔹 Polonaise in A flat major, WN 3 (presentation autograph, Warsaw Music Society) The following publication is the first complete reproduction of the Polonaise, faithfully depicting its original colours and dimensions. This particular autograph was created by Fryderyk Chopin in 1821, with the intention of it being a gift for the composer’s music teacher, Wojciech Żywny. It is currently part of the collection of the Warsaw Music Society. The scientific commentary was written by Ewa Bogula-Gniazdowska. You can get our facsimile editions of Chopin’s works 🖥️ Online: http://sklep.nifc.pl 🛒 In our brick-and-mortar stores
