- Meet the adorable (and hard-as-nails) chinstrap penguin of Antarctica! These charming creatures get their name from the black band that wraps around their chin, making them instantly recognisable 🐧
- Have you ever wondered what Antarctica sounds like? Listen to what I hear in the field. Pictured are chinstrap penguins and Antarctic fur seals.
- A yellow baboon mother suckles her baby on the move! Filmed in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.
- No wonder they're the kings and queens of the savannah! 🦁 However, lions are in trouble. Only 20,000 are left in the wild in Africa.
- The ultimate African wildlife battle: lions vs. buffalo. Filmed in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.
- In addition to being useful for drinking water, elephant trunks are also important for socialising and communicating with other elephants. They use their trunks to touch and interact with each other, and to make a variety of vocalisations 🐘
- Hippos can’t swim, breathe underwater, or even float. But they have developed a tactic that lets them nap underwater! They bob up, take a breath, and sink back down without waking up 😴
- You are watching a bait ball, a fascinating phenomenon that occurs when small schooling fish (in this case herring) come together in a tight, swirling ball in response to predators attacking (here, yellow-fin tuna). This defensive behavior makes it difficult for small numbers of predators to single out a target. When many predators gather, however, the bait ball strategy works against the prey and a feeding frenzy commences!
- When flying drones from boats, hand launching and landing are common practices to avoid crashes caused by a rocking boat. If you plan on trying this, be sure to practice lots from land!
- A pod of pilot whales surrounded our boat. Things then got next level as the pilot whales began to play with oceanic bottlenose dolphins. Seeing two different species play together was pretty mind-blowing! Filmed 50 miles off the coast of Costa Rica.
- Did you know that hammerhead sharks swim in massive schools, often with hundreds of individuals? Sadly these giant schools are becoming rarer and rarer as these sharks are being fished to extinction because of the demand for shark fin soup. Hammerheads have very large dorsal fins, so are a particular target of this evil trade.
- Check out where we lived during a month-long Antarctica shoot!
- Kasanka National Park hosts up to 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats each year. This gathering on this small patch of forest is known as the largest mammal migration in the world!
- Let the peaceful sounds of Zambia's animals transport you to this vibrant and captivating part of the world. Featured are crowned eagles, straw-coloured fruit bats, and, of course, majestic lions.
- Even changing a lightbulb becomes incredibly dangerous when en route to Antarctica!
- Southern sea lions decided to take a nap on the dock. As we loaded nearly a tonne of camera gear, they didn't wake up!
- Losing an eye during a shoot is definitely not ideal! My guide Kevin claimed to have the answer.
- Dan Beecham and I were trying to film krill off the coast of Elephant Island in Antarctica. On one particular dive, we jumped in about 300m/1000ft of water and found this Antarctic krill had been caught by a ctenophore. Both Dan and I got total tunnel vision filming this epic but tiny little battle for survival. At that point, I realised behind Dan was a 25m/80ft fin whale! I’ve never screamed that hard into my diving regulator.
- Fin whales are the second-largest whale species on earth! Turn your phone to get an idea. They can grow to more than 25m/80ft.
- Lions sleep.... a lot. I’m always staggered by a lion’s ability to go from fast asleep to full hunt mode in seconds.
- I love capturing the beautiful world we live in and the incredible animals we share it with. 📷
- Hard to believe this little white ball of fur will be the size of her Crowned Eagle mum in just 4 months!
- Nothing like a good old fashioned family nap! Lions spend most of their time sleeping. In fact, they spend most of their time just hanging out. It’s easy to interpret this as laziness but it’s actually very smart. If you live in a prey rich environment, it pays to stay still and let the food come to you.
- How cool is this perspective? Filmed in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia (under special permission!)
