- My number one piece of advice for anyone starting out in wildlife film: put the camera down. Of course camera skills are important, but far more important is your ability to find your animal subjects and be around them without causing a disturbance. My journey with National Geographic started 10 years ago, when I worked alongside legendary wildlife photographer Steve Winter. Fast-forward to the present, and we’re days away from the launch of my new show, "Animals Up Close." Stream it on Disney+ starting September 13!
- Watching this massive herd of African buffalo gave me a great sense of respect for these incredible animals. They looked like an army marching to battle.
- This very special team of Galápagos sea lions have learned to use teamwork to herd fish into a secret cove serving up a fishy feast. Meet this team and watch the whole hunt in #AnimalsUpClose with @bertiegregory, an Original Series, streaming September 13 on @disneyplus. #NationalWildlifeDay.
- During the dry season in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, it's amazing to see how so many different species all come together at the river, drawn by the same basic need for water.
- Bait balls are the ultimate open ocean wildlife spectacle. Finding them is like searching for a needle in a haystack, and they often don't last long!
- South Luangwa National Park + big rains = very, very, very muddy roads!
- Despite their sometimes clumsy movements on land, these penguins are incredibly resilient, braving treacherous terrain to reach the ocean to find food
- Our oceans are in trouble, and sightings like these are becoming increasingly rare. But we were lucky enough to stumble upon a spot where dolphins gather in huge numbers – a phenomenon known as a superpod.
- Fish eagles might be known for their ability to catch fish, but did you know that they are also skilled bat predators? With their incredible aerial agility, these majestic birds are able to snatch bats right out of the air.
- Surrounded by a shimmering mass of bigeye jacks. The school moves as one, darting and weaving in perfect synchrony to protect themselves from predators.
- A thermocline is a layer in the ocean with a sudden temperature change, creating a visible boundary that shimmers like the heat distortion you get on the horizon in a desert.
- This lioness decided it was time to move her tiny cubs to a new den. Female lions often do this to avoid letting their scent concentrate in one area, which could attract predators.
- Swimming with pilot whales is an incredible experience. For many years, it was thought that pilot whales had a leader that piloted the pod, but recent research has shown that's not actually the case. Instead, these intelligent creatures have a strong bond that keeps the family together.
- I'm setting out on an adventure — will you join me? #AnimalsUpCloseWithBertieGregory, an Original series, is streaming September 13th on @Disney+
- Drones have changed the way we see the world, especially when it comes to whales and dolphins in the open ocean. These spinner dolphins were filmed 50 miles off the coast of Costa Rica.
- Lanternfish undertake a daily vertical migration. Normally they come to the surface at night and return to the deep in the day. Occasionally, for reasons we don’t understand, they get caught at the surface and a feeding frenzy develops.
- Underwater scooters are not only a blast to ride, but they’re also a game-changer when it comes to exploring the ocean!
- As we were getting ready to place a remote camera in the nest of a crowned eagle, Ollie decided it was time for a final safety talk. The crowned eagle's sharp talons can pierce the skulls of its monkey prey, making it a formidable hunter in the African skies. With the help of eagle expert Leslie Reynolds, all went smoothly, and both we and the eagle were kept nice and safe.
- A female crowned eagle feeding her tiny chick. Filmed in Zambia from a tree platform rigged to a tree neighbouring the nest tree.
- A crowned eagle eating a straw-coloured fruit bat during a lightning storm in Kasanka National Park, Zambia.
- This behaviour is known as "mantling" and is a common tactic used by many birds of prey to protect their food (or chicks) from being stolen.
- Female lions do the majority of the pride’s hunting. Check out these ladies on the prowl.
- Dolphins whistle and squeak to communicate.
- Did you know that Costa Rica is home to some of the most diverse marine ecosystems on the planet? Pictured are skipjack tuna, bigeye jacks and spotted dolphins.
