Beginning in clay, Grace shapes each detail by hand, even using lace to create some of its intricate patterns, before layers of gold give the finished helmet its gleaming, time-worn appearance. #TheRoyalOpera #Parsifal #Props #BehindTheScenes #RoyalBalletAndOpera

The making of a masquerade 🎭 For A Masked Ball, our specialist workshops spent three months creating 75 masks for The Royal Opera Chorus. Beginning with a clay sculpture, the masks are moulded and finished by hand. The design must also work for the performers, remaining light enough to wear while allowing them to see and sing freely on stage. 📅 See Philipp Stölzl's new production of A Masked Ball on our Main Stage from 30 November. #TheRoyalOpera #AMaskedBall #Verdi #Opera #RoyalBalletAndOpera
Baroque meets Britney 💃 In Handel’s Alcina, Morgana’s aria ‘Tornami a vagheggiar’ captures her delight after receiving what she believes is a declaration of love. In Richard Jones’s production, that rush of emotion becomes a full dance number, culminating in a lift devised during rehearsals. Mary Bevan takes us behind the aria to reveal how one small change in timing made its final lift possible, and why performing at the centre of the ensemble feels a little like Britney with her dancers. 📅 See Alcina on our Main Stage until 3 October. #TheRoyalOpera #Alcina #Handel #Opera #RoyalBalletAndOpera
