- In 2017, I was sitting in the corner of my grandmaβs living room in the South Bronx, the only place I had to paint. She gave me space when I didnβt have much else. My friend Michael (@siteb_studios) filmed these interviews years before anything of mine went viral. This was before my viral subway drawing reaction videos in 2020. But the subway was never a trend for me. It was my real life. Iβd been drawing people down there since 2010, studying faces, cultures, stories. I just didnβt βblow upβ until ten years later. Thatβs why I always say: donβt chase viral. Donβt chase the spotlight. Fall in love with the process. Fall in love with the craft. Success is usually just years of quiet work that nobody sees. There are so many chapters to this journey, growing up in the Bronx, the setbacks, the doubt, the perseverance. I put it all into my memoir. If you want to read the full story, you can pre-order at the link in my bio or at DevonRodriguezBook.com. Every pre-order brings me closer to becoming a New York Times Best Seller, and that goal means so much to me. I want to show the world that even if Iβm from the Bronx, even if I was raised in poverty, even if I was abused, even if my father abandoned me, even if Iβm Latino, I can still become a NY Times Bestseller! Thank you @penguinrandomhouse @oneworldbooks for believing in my life story ππΌβ₯οΈ

- This interview was filmed in 2017, in the corner of my grandmaβs living room in the South Bronx. I was just a kid in poverty living in the hood with a dream, painting every day and hoping art could change my life. In 2009, I had applied to the High School of Art & Design for ninth grade and got rejected. My drawing portfolio honestly sucked skill wise and lacked range because I hadnβt been practicing much and didnβt know about different mediums or subject matter. In 2010, I ended up at a high school in the Bronx, Samuel Gompers HS where I met an art teacher named Mr. Harper. He saw something in me. For months, he mentored me, pushed me, helped me rebuild my portfolio, and for tenth grade I finally got accepted into the High School of Art & Design. There, I met my oil painting teacher, Mr. Harrington, who transformed the way I saw art. He sharpened my technique, strengthened my discipline, and fueled my drive. I graduated in 2014. I didnβt go viral until 2020. Iβm grateful that my friend Michael @siteb_studios documented those early interviews, because looking back at my mindset then is surreal. I had no idea what was coming. Thank you for supporting this journey. My memoir comes out in September, and my dream is to make it a New York Times bestseller. If you believe in me, Iβd be honored if you pre-order it through the link in my bio or at DevonRodriguezBook.com. I promise you, the stories inside will surprise you as much as they surprised me. Thank you @penguinrandomhouse @oneworldbooks for believing in my me and giving me the opportunity to publish my life story ππΌβ₯οΈ
