Save these 10 fave bites in Japan 👇 1. Ginjo Ramen Kubota, Kyoto — there’s always a queue bc it’s a tiny 8-seat ramen shop but worth the wait. Broth is intensely savoury. Tsukemen dipping broth is smokey/bonito forward. Miso ramen broth blew me away! They use dried shrimp which contributes to the depth of flavour?! 🤯 2. Hakiniku to Come, Kyoto — juicy charcoal grilled hamburger steak served 3 ways 1) plain to appreciate as is (2) with grated radish and housemade ponzu (3) with raw egg. Delicious and fun eating format. Worth the hype 🥩 3. Motoi Gyoza, Kyoto — casual eatery next to Nishiki mkt, sister to Michelin-star French restaurant Motoï. Crispy gyozas and VERY slurp-worthy cold tantanmen🍜 4. Godaime Hanayama Udon, Tokyo — Tiktok-famed extra-wide udon noodles are chewy yet tender. Excellent dashi in the dipping broth and soup broth. My only regret - not trying the wide udon in curry. Someone try for me and report back 😭 5. Unitoro, Tokyo — located in old Tsukiji. Super fresh uni toro rice bowls. Even the rice alone was 10/10. There’s a real difference in high quality Japanese rice which you can taste right away. Pricey (average ¥5,000) but YOLO! 🍣 6. Gyukatsu Motomura, Tokyo (also in Kyoto/Osaka) — tender and juicy beef cutlets ready to grill on hot stone, served with rice, slaw, miso soup and dipping sauces 🔥 7. Imo Pippi, Tokyo (also locations in Kyoto/elsewhere) — menu features 3-month aged purple sweet potatoes. We didn’t care for the honey butter roasted or creme brûlée ones but I LOVED the sweet potato “thread” ice cream 🍠 8. Okaru Okonomiyaki, Osaka — one of my fave budget eats of the trip! Okonomiyaki cooked at the table was so delish. Yakisoba was so good too, all washed down with ice cold plum wine soda 💦 9. Pasta Gallery Potto, Osaka — I was determined to eat Japanese-style pasta this time. Casual spot in PARCO dept store basement, stop by if you’re shopping there. Shoyu Butter Pancetta Corn pasta was everything I wanted it to be! 🌽 10. Negi to Kamo Ramen, Osaka (and Tokyo locations) — only in Japan can you eat such specific types of ramen. If you love duck and ramen, this is a must try 🍜
