Chopin Institute💿 Bruce Liu talks about his experience playing historical pianos and the new recording featuring the inaugural concert of the 2nd Chopin Competition on Period Instruments! On 2 October 2023, at the Warsaw Philharmonic, at the invitation of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, pianists who are shaping today’s musical world – an icon of the piano and young virtuosos – came together: Martha Argerich, Bruce Liu and Tomasz Ritter. Two winners of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition and the winner of the International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments. Together with the {oh!} Orchestra, conducted by Vaclav Luks, they inaugurated the 2nd Chopin Competition on Period Instruments. They played Beethoven. This was no coincidence. The concert opened with Dai Fujikura’s “Bridging Realms” – a piece commissioned by the Institute – performed by Naruhiko Kawaguchi, himself a laureate of the Chopin Competition on Period Instruments. Symbolically. For it was an evening where different musical dimensions, eras and sensibilities came together, featuring great and exceptional artists – each in their own way. A truly unique evening. This double-CD album captures that fleeting moment of musical bliss, a concentration of beauty, colour and extraordinary energy that swept through everyone present in the concert hall at the time.
