Chopin Institute🏰 The musical collection at Castle Museum in Malbork The Malbork Castle is a significant place on the cultural map of Poland. It boasts magnificent collections – those that survived the ravages of war, as well as those carefully amassed since 1961, when it became the museum’s headquarters. Currently, it houses 40,000 objects, including, as the institution’s website states, “the collection of medieval architectural elements, which is among the largest in Europe, a collection of artistic amber products, unique on a global scale, an impressive set of old weapons and armaments, or a rich collection of numismatics referring to the historic Malbork mints.” The Castle’s fortunes were turbulent. Built in 1280 by the Teutonic Order, from 1457 it passed over the following centuries under Polish and Prussian rule, gradually neglected, and by the end of the 18th century practically devastated, it was recognized in the early 19th century as a significant monument and a component of Prussian and German identity. Since then, it has been progressively restored to its former glory – the Castle’s present appearance is the result of reconstruction work carried out after World War II, during which over 50 percent of the building was destroyed. The part of Museum’s collection is formed by musical old prints and manuscripts of sacred works by local composers, including cantatas by Otto Gladau, who was active at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Malbork music repertory is currently being digitized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute thanks to a grant from the European Funds for Digital Development program.
