- Happy birthday to @snoopdogg! Collabing on “Boogie’s In My Soul” was pure fun from the jump, and I’m so glad we got to bring our worlds together. Snoop brought exactly what you’d expect: style, personality, and his own unmistakable Doggystyle. Sending him a whole lot of love today. Happy birthday, Snoop. Keep boogieing. Love, Chaka 💜 #ChakaKhan #SnoopDogg #BoogiesInMySoul #CHAKZILLA
- On this day in 1974, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan released “You Got The Love,” written by Chaka and Ray Parker Jr. It was the follow-up to “Tell Me Something Good” and proved that Rufus’ breakthrough was no one-hit wonder. Released October 19 on ABC Records, the single climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent 16 weeks. The story behind the song is almost as good as the record. Parker later recalled that he originally hoped Stevie Wonder or Barry White would record it. Neither did. Rufus drummer André Fischer, who lived next door to Parker, suggested Rufus take a shot at it instead. Parker brought in the basic musical idea and melody, while Chaka completed much of the lyric. Parker has said hearing Chaka sing it transformed the song completely. “You Got The Love” opened RAGS TO RUFUS, the album that also contained “Tell Me Something Good.” The album itself reached No. 4 on both Billboard’s pop and R&B album charts and eventually went platinum. The song also stayed with Chaka through the years. It became the opening track on STOMPIN’ AT THE SAVOY – LIVE in 1983, and in 2007 she revisited it again on FUNK THIS, folding it into a medley with “Pack’d My Bags” and bringing Rufus guitarist Tony Maiden back into the picture. What’s your favorite Rufus track from this era? #ChakaKhan #Rufus #TonyMaiden
- On this day in 1978, CHAKA arrived, marking the beginning of Chaka Khan’s solo recording career while she was still very much a member of Rufus. Released October 12 and produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, the album reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Billboard’s R&B albums chart. Overseas, CHAKA also charted in the Netherlands at No. 50 and Australia at No. 74. At the center of the album was Chaka’s first solo single, “I’m Every Woman,” written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. The song became an immediate anthem, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart for three weeks and No. 21 on the Hot 100. Its impact quickly spread internationally, climbing to No. 11 in the UK, No. 15 in the Netherlands, No. 16 in Ireland, No. 18 in New Zealand and No. 20 in Belgium. There are plenty of deep-cut surprises on CHAKA as well. George Benson shares vocals with Chaka on “We Got The Love,” while Rufus guitarist Tony Maiden appears on Chaka’s gender-flipped take on the Stevie Wonder classic “I Was Made To Love Him.” Chaka also co-wrote “Some Love,” while Mardin surrounded her with an extraordinary group of musicians that included Steve Ferrone, Will Lee, Richard Tee, Phil Upchurch and Hamish Stuart. The album was recorded primarily at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York, with additional work in Los Angeles. And of course, “I’m Every Woman” would take on another life in 1992 when Whitney Houston recorded it for THE BODYGUARD, with Chaka herself among the voices heard on the recording. Forty-eight years later, CHAKA still sounds like an artist opening a new door and discovering just how many directions she could go. What’s your favorite track on Chaka’s solo debut? #ChakaKhan #CHAKA #ImEveryWoman

- On this day in 1984, Chaka released I FEEL FOR YOU, the album that became one of the biggest commercial and creative milestones of her solo career. With Arif Mardin among its producers, the record pushed Chaka into a new electronic, pop and hip-hop-influenced sound without losing the power of her voice. The album climbed to No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and No. 4 on Billboard’s R&B albums chart, while also reaching No. 15 in the UK, No. 9 in Sweden, No. 14 in Switzerland, No. 17 in Germany and No. 22 in New Zealand. It was certified platinum in the U.S. Then there was the title track. Written and first recorded by Prince, Chaka’s version added Stevie Wonder on harmonica and Grandmaster Melle Mel’s unforgettable opening rap. The single reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the U.S. R&B and Dance charts, and went all the way to No. 1 in the UK, where it stayed for three weeks. It also reached No. 2 in New Zealand and No. 4 in Germany. The song went on to win Chaka the 1985 Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female, while Prince won Best R&B Song as its writer. The album also gave us “Through The Fire,” “This Is My Night,” “Eye To Eye,” and Chaka’s take on Gary Wright’s “My Love Is Alive.” More than four decades later, I FEEL FOR YOU still sounds fearless. Which track are you turning up today? #ChakaKhan
