Here are 5 that tend to scare people the most, and what’s actually going on: - Chest pains / sharp shooting pains These can feel like something is seriously wrong with your heart. But anxiety can cause muscle tension and changes in breathing that create very real chest sensations. - Shortness of breath / hyperventilation It can feel like you can’t get enough air in. Often, you’re over-breathing, which disrupts oxygen and CO2 balance and creates that suffocating feeling. - Depersonalization / derealization Feeling detached from yourself or the world can be terrifying. But it’s a normal part of the stress response, not a sign you’re losing your mind. - Racing heart / palpitations Your heart pounding or skipping beats can feel alarming. This is your fight-or-flight system doing its job, even if it feels out of proportion. - Racing thoughts When your mind won’t slow down, it can feel like you’re losing control. It’s actually your brain trying to problem-solve and protect you, just in overdrive. None of these mean you’re in danger. They’re uncomfortable. They’re intense. But they’re explainable. If you want to understand anxiety properly (and ask me anything about it), I’m hosting a live Q&A on Anxiety Fitness to celebrate the launch of my new book Same Time Next Week? 23rd April 7pm UK time Click the link in @anxiety_fitness’s bio to join.
