Ami VitaleDiving deep into the world of GIANT PANDAS and the incredible efforts to save the species was one of the most unimaginable explorations I've ever had. For more than 30 years, researchers have been working on breeding and releasing pandas, augmenting existing populations, and protecting their habitats—and they’re finally having success. In 2016, their status was upgraded from critical to vulnerable. Today, their numbers are going up in the wild. China is also taking captive-born pandas and releasing them back into the wild. The bears will have no lines of schoolchildren waiting to meet them or a fan page on Facebook but as the pandas trundle off into the wild, they take with them hope for their entire species. The slow and steady incline in the population of giant pandas is a testament to the perseverance and efforts of scientists and conservationists. China may be on its way to successfully saving its most famous ambassador and, in the process, putting the wild back into an icon. National Panda Day is SATURDAY, March 16th so dust off your panda suits and celebrate like an Ursidae! See more Panda Love by following @Vital Impacts #panda #pandas #pandamonium #china @Nikon USA
