PaigeTingeyThis is one of the only places in the world you can see hundreds of macaws 🦜 Illegal gold mining is spreading inside Tambopata National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. It clears the forest these macaws depend on and pollutes the rivers with mercury. The good news? Peru is fighting back. In August, the military launched Operation Mercury 2, raiding illegal mining camps inside the reserve. In just three days they destroyed 78 mining rafts and 56 motors. The goal is to push the miners out and stay long term so they don’t come back. Tourism can help too. When travelers come to see this place, it gives the people who live here a reason to keep the forest standing.
