National GeographicBlack rhinos once again roam Matusadona National Park, decades after poachers turned the Zimbabwean refuge into what one conservationist called “a killing zone for rhinos.” As commercial poaching killed more than 90 percent of the world's black rhinos, wildlife teams tracked survivors hiding in remote parts of the Zambezi Valley and hauled them through the bush on makeshift sleds until trucks could carry them to protected areas. More than 30 years later, some descendants of those survivors have returned to their ancestral landscape—and conservationists plan to release even more.
