National GeographicPolar bears are powerful swimmers and patient coastal hunters, traveling long distances in search of seals. During summer, when sea ice retreats, they enter a state often called “walking hibernation,” conserving energy as they rest, roam, and scavenge. Here, a bear moves along the rocky shores of Hudson Bay at dusk, silhouetted against a pink sky. Using a drone, photographer Martin Gregus Jr. (@mywildlive) safely captured the moment from afar, following the bear well beyond the reach of camp.
