Zainab. To understand why Black women continue to face profound inequities in maternity care, we have to understand the history of medicine that helped shape them, a history deeply rooted in the treatment of Black women in maternal and reproductive healthcare. Racist beliefs about Black women’s bodies did not simply disappear. They became embedded in medical systems, structures and practice. Today, structural and systemic racism are well documented contributors to inequities across the maternal healthcare continuum. Black women remain around three times more likely to die from maternal causes than White women. As healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility not only to recognise these structures, but to actively break them. Because when racism remains embedded in healthcare, Black women continue to pay for it with their lives. #medicine#gynecology#nurse
