Millennial In DebtMy Financial Goals Caption When it comes to “humble brags” I always like to provide context. Not to diminish the win, but to highlight the reality THE WIN: Paid off $102,000 in student loans on a teacher salary THE CONTEXT: It took me 8 years total, and 5 years of financial focus. I paid double what I borrowed due to interest and I had the privilege of living at home. Not something everyone has the ability to do. THE WIN: Bought a house on my own in 2019 THE CONTEXT: I was saving towards a down payment for 4 years while paying off my student loans. ALSO : Yesterday’s price is NOT today’s price. I would not be able to purchase my home now in today’s housing market and definitely wouldn’t be able to afford this neighborhood. THE WIN: Paid off my car in one year THE CONTEXT: I put down a large amount of money (not always possible for most and not always advisable to do). Then created a sinking fund to save / pay off the amount financed in 12 months. THE WIN: Reached COAST Fire with $170,000+ invested in the market THE CONTEXT: I’ve been investing since 2011 into my 403B. I started with $121 bi-weekly contributions and increased the contribution slowly whenever I got a raise. The point is — don’t feel like you’re behind or doing badly, most people don’t share their realities on line just their wins. It is NOT always just about hard work. Sometimes it’s a mix of circumstance and timing while doing the work. I do not come from money but there are factors that have allowed me to hit certain goals that must be included in the narrative.
