melissa.danilovI worked in a long-term nursing facility for two years and I'm still amazed by all the things I've learned about aging. One thing for sure: ANY type of strength training at your level of ability makes a big difference in slowing down your cognitive and physical decline. We had an in-house fitness center for residents to attend physical therapy sessions daily, for good reason. Movement matters. Cardio for heart and metabolism. Weights for preserving muscle and bone structure. A big myth I see is people refusing to lift weights because they think they're too ill or injured. But many of my chronically ill patients, often bedridden, were still being visited by physical therapists everyday to do exercises tailored to their specific abilities with small weights. Patients with injuries or recovering after surgery also all engaged in physical therapy daily to the level that they can, transitioning into weight-bearing movements as able. From a psychiatric standpoint (as a PMHNP), I see it as an effective intervention for reducing and/or preventing symptoms of depression, anxiety, memory problems, brain fog, and fatigue. Do what you can, with what you can, while you canπ€ππΌββοΈ #gym #physicaltherapy #weights #psychiatry #strengthtraining
