Maya Wei-Haas, PhD2024 was a wild ride. It was my first full year of freelancing as a science journalist and travel guide — and it was jam-packed. I guided 6 trips for #NatGeoExpeditions and #smithsonianjourneys through 8 different countries, published my kids book What a Rock Can Reveal, took my first ghostwriting assignment for a book, and wrote stories for Quanta Magazine, The New York Times, Science Magazine, Smithsonian, and Times for Kids! I started 2024 unsure I could make it as a freelancer. And while I still suffer plenty of self-doubt, this past year showed me that I just need to keep going. More waterfalls, whales, and things that make me say WOW are still waiting around the corner.
