Joel SartoreLiving in open grasslands and roosting in abandoned underground burrows, burrowing owls are built differently than your average owl. Longer legs allow this bird to sprint after prey while hunting and they’ve become masters of acoustic mimicry. When threatened by a predator, this owl will retreat into its burrow and make rattling and hissing noises mimicking the warnings produced by a rattlesnake, warding off anyone that might cause harm.
