Joel SartoreWith a body similar in size to a squirrel, the eyes of the black-headed night monkey look far too big for its body. Though they may look awkward, those big eyes serve an important purpose, improving this monkey’s nocturnal vision, increasing its ability to be active at night. Unlike other nocturnal species, night monkeys lack a tapetum lucidum in the eye, which means they don’t have the typical “eyeshine” seen in animals like cats. Their vision is also monochromatic - night monkeys see the world in shades of gray rather than multiple colors. #monkey #nightmonkey #primate #animal #wildlife #video #footage #reel
