Joel SartoreWondering why this elongated tortoise has a red mark on its shell? The mark is used by wildlife professionals for tracking purposes, helping them to keep tabs on individual tortoises. Tracking can be an extremely important conservation tool, especially for a critically endangered species like this one that is threatened by mass, illegal harvesting for the pet trade and food markets in China and East Asia. #tortoise #endangered #tracking #animal #PhotoArk #video
