Dritan AlselaThe world must look at what is happening in Albania. For years, Albania has been living under Edi Rama’s government — a government that, in my opinion, has captured institutions, weakened real opposition, controlled much of the media narrative, and changed laws in a way that now allows protected natural areas to be opened for massive construction and so-called strategic investments. This is not development. This is the destruction of Albania’s nature and Albania’s future. Today, hundreds of projects are being discussed or planned in areas that should belong to the people and to future generations. Albania is a small country, with a small economy, yet projects worth billions are being pushed forward. The Kushner-linked projects alone are reported to be worth billions. And while all this is happening, many Albanian media outlets stay silent. Political parties stay silent. Institutions stay silent. That is why these protests matter so much. Look at this video: a young man proposes to the woman he loves in the middle of the “Pelican Revolution” protest. This is not just a romantic moment. This shows how deeply this protest has entered the hearts of young Albanians. For them, this is not only about nature. It is about freedom. It is about dignity. It is about whether Albania will remain a country for Albanians — or become a playground for powerful investors, politicians and criminal networks. I hope Ursula von der Leyen, Marta Kos and Giorgia Meloni see these images too. They should understand that the young generation of Albania is not protesting for politics. They are protesting because this may be their last hope for a free Albania, a European Albania, and an Albania that belongs to its people.
