Bungalow Heaven RailroadBefore Hetch Hetchy could bring water to San Francisco, the city had to build a railroad. Locomotives like Hetch Hetchy No. 6 hauled cement, steel, equipment, and supplies into the Sierra Nevada to help construct O’Shaughnessy Dam and the water system that still serves millions today. More than a century later, No. 6 is preserved in El Portal just outside Yosemite National Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While the dam remains controversial, there’s no question that this little locomotive played a role in shaping California history.
